Biography
Cindi SturtzSreetharan received her PhD at the University of California, Davis. She is a Professor of Anthropology in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC). Cindi understands language as a form of social action; she has used this lens to examine the ways that people create and ascribe identities through social interactions. Specifically, Cindi is interested in the ways that structural regularities of language use reflect larger social structuring. Her work has investigated the use of language in creating or rejecting gendered identities with a particular focus on masculinity. Additionally, she uses novel methodologies, including a citizen sociolinguistic framework, to examine interactional genres such as fat talk and age talk. The book Fat in Four Cultures: A Global Ethnography of Weight is a co-authored cross-cultural ethnography comparing the lived experience of weight in Japan, the US, Samoa, and Paraguay. Cindi is co-author on an innovative textbook, The Human Story: An Introduction to Anthropology (2024, Norton Publishers), providing an engaging, student-centered, holistic, and up-to-date interpretation of that field for undergraduate students nationally and internationally.  Cindi co-directs a large social science research lab that mentors an average of 18 undergraduate and graduate students each semester on research methods.
