Please Take Her as Your Wife: Mediatizing the indigenous Ainu in the Japanese anime, Golden Kamuy.

Rika Ito is a Professor of Asian Studies who teaches Japanese and linguistics at St. Olaf College, Minnesota, USA. Her research focuses on the role of language in society in identity negotiation in daily interactions, and on how popular media perpetuates stereotypes to normalize dominant ideologies, particularly anime, one of the main reasons for studying Japanese. Her recent project examines the representations of the Ainu, indigenous people of northern Japan, in private virtual space (such as anime) and in official and physical space (such as Upopoy, the National Ainu Museum opened in 2020) in relation to the current tabunka kyōsei ‘multiculturalism’ discourse and a century-old portrayal of the Ainu as a dying race with her colleague, Prof. Christina Spiker, an Art historian who specializes Ainu visual art.
